The College of Information Science and Engineering of Hohai University originated from the Radio Design and Manufacturing major founded in 1960. Its predecessor was the Department of Electronic Engineering of the College of Mechanical Engineering of Hohai University established in 1986. It was renamed the School of Computer and Information Engineering (Changzhou) in 1995, then the School of Computer and Information (Changzhou) in 2009, and in November 2012, it became the School of Internet of Things Engineering. In April 2023, it was renamed again to the School of Information Science and Engineering.
The College offers four undergraduate programs: Communication Engineering, Internet of Things Engineering, Electronic Information Engineering and Electronic Science and Technology. Among these, Communication Engineering and Internet of Things Engineering were selected as national-level first-class undergraduate programs in 2021. In 2022, the Communication Engineering major passed the China Engineering Education Professional Certification. In 2023, the Internet of Things Engineering major passed the China Engineering Education Professional Certification. Additionally, the Communication Engineering program is a National Distinctive Major, a pilot program for the National Plan for Training Outstanding Engineers, a National Comprehensive Reform Pilot Program, a Jiangsu Provincial Brand Major, and a Provincial Key Major. The Internet of Things Engineering program is also recognized as a National Distinctive Major, a Jiangsu Provincial Brand Major, and a Provincial Key Major. In recent years, the College has developed four national-level first-class courses, approved one Ministry of Education virtual teaching pilot, and recognized an excellent grassroots teaching organization in Jiangsu Province, led one of the first New Engineering projects from the Ministry of Education, and received 22 Industry-Academia Collaborative Education Projects. Furthermore, the College has received one Jiangsu Provincial Higher Education Teaching Reform Project and one Provincial Key Textbook Project. The College has established two national-level practical teaching bases, including the Hohai University–Jiangsu Guoguang Information Industry Co., Ltd. Engineering Practice Education Center and the Hohai University–Guangzhou Zhou Ligong Microcontroller Technology Co., Ltd. Engineering Practice Education Center, as well as provincial-level bases like the Hohai University–Changzhou Mobile Internet of Things Engineering Practice Education Center, the Electronic Information Technology Provincial Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, and the Jiangsu Provincial Engineering Talents Training Innovation Experimental Base for Electrical and Information Engineering. Committed to the mission of Cultivating Talents for the Party and the Nation, the College aims to train exceptional talents with solid theoretical foundations and strong practical innovation skills. Over the past three years, students from the College have won 1 national special prize in the Challenge Cup, four first prizes and 16 second prizes in the China College Students' Software Design Competition, establishing itself as an important base for innovation talent training in fields like Communication Engineering, Internet of Things Engineering.
Currently, the College has a first-class doctoral program in “Information and Communication Engineering” and a professional doctoral program in “Electronic information.” It also owns the Key Laboratory of Maritime Intelligent Cyberspace Technology (Hohai University), Ministry of Education, the Jiangsu Provincial Key Laboratory of Transmission and Distribution Equipment Technology, and the Jiangsu Provincial Marine Monitoring Equipment and Data Processing Engineering Center. Additionally, the College co-hosts the Jiangsu Provincial Key Laboratory of Special Robot Technology and several other key research platforms in Changzhou, covering areas like robotics, sensor networks, and UAV control technology. In the past five years, the College has completed over 40 national-level projects, including the National Key R&D Program and National Natural Science Foundation projects, receiving numerous awards for scientific progress, including the Ministry of Education Science and Technology Progress Award (First Prize) and the Wu Wenjun Artificial Intelligence Science and Technology Progress Award (Second Prize). Faculty members have published over 420 SCI-indexed papers and obtained more than 500 national invention patents.
The College currently has over 1,850 undergraduates, more than 600 graduate students, and over 30 international students. The faculty comprises 109 members, including 75 full-time teachers, 23 professors, and 37 associate professors. With 16 doctoral advisors and 46 master’s advisors, 86.6% of the full-time faculty hold doctoral degrees, and 51.4% have overseas experience. The school has one member elected as an IEEE Fellow and two members selected for national talent programs. Four members have received the Baogang Education Fund Outstanding Teacher Award, three members were selected as the top 2% scientists in the world in 2024, one faculty member has been listed among the Highly Cited Researchers in China by Elsevier, one has won the Xu Zhilu Teaching Award, and one has received the Google Teaching Award.
